Korle Klottey MCE Champions Urban Transformation as Ghana Unveils Sustainable Cities Strategy

The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) hosted the official launch of Ghana’s Sustainable Cities Strategy with a powerful call for innovation, local financing, and climate-conscious urban development.

In his welcome address, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, Municipal Chief Executive of KoKMA, highlighted the critical role of local authorities in shaping the future of Ghana’s urban spaces.

"Cities must drive green growth and inclusive transformation. Building resilient cities requires collective action — from government to civil society, from communities to development partners," Hon. Allotey-Gaisie emphasized.

The event gathered high-level dignitaries including Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs; Deputy minister, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Hon. Joseph Yiele Chireh; representatives of the World Bank and other development partners.

KoKMA was showcased as a leading example of urban sustainability and fiscal innovation. The MCE revealed that through the adoption of a digital property rate platform in 2024, KoKMA’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) rose from GHS 14.7 million in 2023 to GHS 25.3 million in 2024, representing a 41% increase.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, KoKMA mobilized over GHS 10.4 million, triggering a 48.79% increase over the same period the previous year.

“Korle Klottey sets a benchmark in urban finance,” the MCE stated. “Our digital reforms are enabling greater transparency, efficiency, and investment in quality-of-life infrastructure.”

Commitment to Climate Action and Green Jobs

Hon. Allotey-Gaisie also outlined KoKMA’s strategy for climate resilience — including the integration of green spaces, support for waste-to-resource innovations, and active participation in carbon market projects such as biogas and composting.

“We are turning waste into resources, reducing emissions, and creating green jobs. These actions are environmentally sound and economically advantageous,” he said.

A Shared Responsibility for a Greener Future

The Sustainable Cities Strategy aligns with SDGs 11, 12, 13, and 15 and aims to create inclusive, climate-smart, and economically vibrant cities across Ghana.

"Together for a greener Ghana," the MCE concluded, "let us chart a path that not only addresses today’s urban challenges but unlocks a future of opportunity, equity, and environmental stewardship for all."
