The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, has met with leaders of markets and lorry stations to discuss strategies for improving sanitation, governance, and infrastructure within the municipality.
Addressing the session, Hon. Allotey-Gaisie declared: “We cannot allow poor sanitation to define the identity of our markets. From today, enforcement of our by-laws will be strict. Through Operation Clean Your Area, every union, market, and station will take responsibility for keeping their environment clean.”
The MCE announced that the Assembly will distribute trash bags, engage cleaners and private waste operators, and incentivize plastic collection and recycling. He also revealed plans for a city-wide National Sanitation Day on 4th October 2025, complemented by games and community activities. A One Household, One Dustbin policy will also be rolled out to curb indiscriminate dumping.
On redevelopment, Hon. Allotey-Gaisie confirmed that feasibility studies for Odawna Market have been completed and approved by the Ministry of Finance, with similar projects planned for Tema Station, Osu Day Market, and Osu Night Market. “Not a single trader will be displaced. Construction will be phased to protect livelihoods,” he assured. All projects will follow the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure transparency and accountability.
The MCE also disclosed that new streetlights will soon be installed in markets, lorry stations, and dark spots to improve safety. He further announced the creation of a Market Management Committee (MMC) to strengthen collaboration between market leaders, transport unions, and assembly members.
CStakeholders welcomed the initiatives but raised concerns over waste dumping, poor flooring at Osu Night Market, congestion at CMB Station, and inefficient ticketing systems. They also appealed for youth engagement in sanitation exercises.
In closing, Hon. Allotey-Gaisie reassured participants: “No land is being sold. No trader is being displaced. My doors remain open for dialogue. Together, we can build a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous Korle Klottey for all.”
