President John Dramani Mahama Relaunches National Sanitation Day

President John Dramani Mahama has relaunched Ghana’s National Sanitation Day under the theme “A Clean Environment, Our Responsibility.”

The relaunch underscored the importance of individual and community accountability in maintaining a clean environment and highlighted the need for collaborative action to address Ghana’s sanitation challenges. The initiative seeks to empower local governments and promote a culture of hygiene through:
• Monthly cleanup exercises across the country.
• Intensified public education on proper sanitation practices.
• Strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws at the community level.

The official ceremony, held at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina, brought together government officials, traditional leaders, municipal assemblies, civil society organizations, and community members, reaffirming national commitment to sustainable sanitation practices.

As part of the nationwide effort, the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) has pledged its full commitment to the programme by actively engaging business owners, traders, transport operators, and residents within the municipality. KoKMA will roll out a series of community clean-up activities, sensitization campaigns, and enforcement of sanitation by-laws to ensure that the vision of a clean and healthy environment is fully realized in Korle Klottey.

The Assembly is encouraging all stakeholders to participate in the monthly exercise, strengthen community involvement in waste management, and adopt better hygiene practices. By leading with strong community mobilization, KoKMA aims to set an example of municipal responsibility and contribute significantly to the national goal of building a cleaner, healthier Ghana.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Korle Klottey, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, emphasized that “Sanitation is not only a government priority but also a shared responsibility. We are calling on every resident, business owner, and stakeholder within Korle Klottey to actively participate in this national campaign. Together, we can transform our communities and make Korle Klottey a model of cleanliness and environmental stewardship.”
