The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), has taken a significant step towards addressing the perennial flooding challenges within the municipality. A comprehensive validation exercise was conducted to identify and confirm flood-prone areas, with the aim of informing targeted interventions to improve urban resilience and protect vulnerable communities.
The validation exercise, which employed spatial analysis, field inspections, and drone mapping, confirmed several critical hotspots, including Odawna Sahara, Odawna, Asylum Down, and Osu Regal.
These areas have consistently experienced flooding due to blocked drainage channels, encroachment on waterways, and rapid, unregulated development.
The detailed spatial report recommended key interventions, such as:
- Drain expansion
- Removal of unauthorized structures
- Strict enforcement of land use regulations
A stakeholder validation meeting was held to present and review the findings, with participants including the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, the Municipal Coordinating Director, members of the Spatial Planning and Technical Planning Committees, Traditional Council representatives, Assembly Members, and other relevant municipal officers.
The participants reviewed and endorsed the findings, offering additional community-level insights and suggestions to enhance the effectiveness of planned interventions.
Moving forward, the Assembly plans to implement a multi-phased action plan involving:
- Desilting of drains
- Public education campaigns
- Integration of flood control measures into the local development agenda
The Assembly is also exploring funding opportunities and inter-agency collaboration to support long-term flood mitigation infrastructure.
This collaborative initiative underscores the importance of evidence-based planning, inter-agency coordination, and stakeholder participation in building a flood-resilient Korle Klottey.
By working together, the Assembly and LUSPA aim to reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities and promote sustainable development in the municipality.
