On Monday, 3rd June 2025, the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) led a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the June 3rd flood and fire disaster, which claimed over 150 lives in Accra in 2015.
The event was held at the very site of the tragedy—the former GOIL fuel station—and was attended by bereaved families, community members, government officials, and civil society partners.
Delivering the keynote address, the Municipal Chief Executive of KoKMA, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, reflected on the gravity of the day and called for collective resolve to prevent future disasters.
“Ten years ago, our community was tested by a tragic convergence of flood and fire. Today, we stand united—not only in grief, but in hope, action, and remembrance,” Hon. Allotey-Gaisie stated.
Hon. Allotey-Gaisie outlined KoKMA’s ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness and urban resilience. Central among these is the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, a World Bank-funded initiative aimed at strengthening flood control infrastructure and solid waste management within the Odaw River Basin.
“GARID is more than a project—it’s our collective insurance against future tragedy. We’re enhancing infrastructure but also investing in public education and emergency response readiness,” he emphasized.
