Hon. Nii Adjei Tawiah Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly Cut Sod for “Removing Pollution from Play” Project

In many African cities like Accra, where walking is a common mode of transportation, rising vehicle traffic is significantly harming pedestrians, particularly children who often use the streets as play areas. Vehicle traffic is a major contributor to the city’s air pollution levels, exacerbated by unpaved and dusty roads.

To combat this issue, the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly together with Clean Air Fund and Global Designing Cities Initiative has launched the “Removing Pollution from Play” project that focuses on redesigning streets around the Osu Salem 1 School to improve air quality by increasing pedestrian and children’s spaces.

In a short ceremony to cut sod for the commencement of the project at the Osu Salem 1 School, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nii Adjei Tawiah said, the project is a laudable one as it will provide a new play area for the school and the community as a whole.

He also stated that it will improve air and noise quality around the Osu Salem 1 School by reducing vehicle traffic on the Sir Charles Quist Street.

“We cannot downplay the connection between street design and air quality and wellbeing. An example is the Accra High School Street and the Akasanoma Street at Adabraka, being a one-way street has contributed to reduce congestion and its related problems”, he added.

Hon. Nii Adjei Tawiah stated that it is important to work together with stakeholders to improve air quality to promote good well-being, especially for children living in the city.

He further mentioned that there is the political will to create the opportunities for more child-friendly and safe spaces in the municipality.

The actual redevelopment is expected to be completed within a maximum of four weeks upon commencement of work and the intervention includes Children’s playground, Pedestrian Walkway and greenery at the project site.
