Designing Streets For Cleaner Air

KoKMA, in collaboration with the Clean Air Fund and GDCI, has held a training workshop on designing streets for cleaner air.

The Korle Klottey Muncipal Assembly in collaboration with Clean Air Fund and the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) have held a training workshop on the critical connection between street design and air quality to demonstrate how to reimagine our streets to promote cleaner air for Accra’s citizens.

The Global Designing Cities Initiative is a team of designers, planners, and urban strategists committed to reimagining streets as places for people, shaping cities that are safe, healthy, accessible, and equitable for everyone.

They have applied their design principles in cities across the globe, helping to update policies, build local capacity, implement, and evaluate projects, and scale up impact.

Recognizing the important role that streets play in our communities, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nii Adjei Tawiah said the training will highlight the interdependence of street design choices and air quality outcomes.

He said it is relevant to gain an International perspective on understanding of innovative approaches and best practices that can be implemented to mitigate air pollution and foster healthier urban environments.

Hon. Adjei Tawiah acknowledged that the training will help set the foundation for future potential designs and projects in Accra that will support improved air quality for Accra.

Participants were taken through a series of presentations on implementing and maintaining pop-up or interim street transformations with a focus on community-driven street designs that ensure the safety and comfort of all street users.

The presentation also captured international best practices, strategies, programmes and policies that cities around the world have used to design spaces that enable children of all ages and abilities to utilise cities' most abundant assets - streets.
